Bad, bad optical drives

In the past, I have often complained about failing optical drives. So it was with great anticipation that I started to read the Ask Slashdot entry about such failures.

Apart from some interesting replies (about fragile mechanisms, cheap components, and heat and vibrations), I did not learn all that much. The basics of maintaining optical drives continue to be:

  • cheap hardware is cheap
  • buy professional equipment if it needs to last
  • avoid dust, smoke, fog, drought
  • avoid heat, temperature fluctuations
  • avoid vibrations
  • avoid the use of cleaning discs as much as possible
  • you need a lot of luck

If the problem is the alignment of the pick-up unit, then kuro5hin may have some advice.
