Bad, bad optical drives
In the past, I have often complained about failing optical drives. So it was with great anticipation that I started to read the Ask Slashdot entry about such failures.
Apart from some interesting replies (about fragile mechanisms, cheap components, and heat and vibrations), I did not learn all that much. The basics of maintaining optical drives continue to be:
- cheap hardware is cheap
- buy professional equipment if it needs to last
- avoid dust, smoke, fog, drought
- avoid heat, temperature fluctuations
- avoid vibrations
- avoid the use of cleaning discs as much as possible
- you need a lot of luck
If the problem is the alignment of the pick-up unit, then kuro5hin may have some advice.
