iPod mini mass storage

I have acquired an iPod mini (the new model, with longer battery life and a sexier price). It’s a nice device, but it has let me down in one area.

I had read you could use it ‘like a hard drive’, which I interpreted as it having USB mass storage support. So I figured it was, in addition to a good music player, also kind of a 4GB memory key — which is not that bad for €209. No such luck, for iPod’s mass storage support is not of the generic type. Therefore it only works in OSes that ‘know’ about the iPod.

The result is that old OSes like Windows 98 do not recognize the iPod as an external hard drive. There seems to be a fix for this, but it still prevents memory key-like convenience. Also, in Linux you need to jump trough a small kernel hoop to mount it successfully over USB.

On the up side, I didn’t know it had a built-in .txt viewer.
