Lirc on Fedora

Had some fun a while ago helping out Dries setting up Lirc on Fedora Core 3 with his Pinnacle PCTV remote & receiver. It was kind of urgent for him, and after plowing trough the docs and reviewing debugging logs, we got it to work. Turns out, Klirc is not really bad and has some basic DCOP integration.

Tips for Fedora users struggling with lirc:

  • Install the latest lirc from source. Get a CVS snapshot.
  • Make sure you use the right devices. Edit /etc/sysconfig/lirc and tell it to use the right ttySx and socket.
  • Don’t trust lirc’s make install. Manually copy the generated executables and config files to their correct locations.
  • Make lirc verbose with lircd -D2 and tail the logs: tail -f /var/log/lircd

Dries now uses his remote to send keyboard commands to the browser (via irxevent), which then get trapped by some custom javascript. And he uses irexec to start other apps when needed.
