Humanized Enso
Since I’ve read the book “The Humane Interface” by user interface pioneer Jef Raskin, I’ve tried to follow his accomplishments.
I was sad to learn that early versions of ‘THE’ (The Humane Environment) were quite disappointing — not so much in innovation but rather in quality and maturity. It was even more sad to read in in 2005 that Raskin had passed away.
I wondered whether this new direction in human-computer interfaces would die together with its inceptor. Would someone ever build a workable system according to these concepts? Would we ever be able to check whether Raskin’s ideas were right?
It seems so.
Jef’s son, Asa Raskin, recently gave an impressive presentation at Google, which you can watch (of course) at Google Video. It’s called “Away with Applications: the Death of the Desktop“.
Raskin presents Humanized Enso, (currently) as desktop add-on with a ‘humanized’ user interface.
I could elaborate on how this all makes so much sense (and I probably will at a later time), but for now I recommend you to watch the presentation.

Did you know Raskin was at the head of the Macintosh project until Jobs took over. He actually gave it the name “Macintosh” after his favourite kind of apples. I’ll end you “revolution in the valley” if you want … you can also find all those stories at http://www.folklore.org.

Yes, Raskin is one of the original creators of the Macintosh…
I’m very interested in that book!

@fl0: It’s awesome – changed the way I look at computers in general.
Enso is great, too, but a tad buggy at this point. It crashes occasionally for me. But it’s very easy to get hooked on – now I can’t stand working on any machine where it’s not installed.

mooie presentatie.
